European Seed Diversity Network meeting - 2010. március 25-27. Graz
“The year 2010 will be decisive in the debate about intellectual property rights concerning seeds. The EU wants to pass seed legislation that is uniform throughout Europe. In the future, will just industrial varieties be available on the seed market while regional and farmers varieties will be found only in museums and show gardens? All signs indicate that seed corporations are using the revision of the seed law to expand their power further. The EU directive on conservation varieties and non-industrial varieties complicates or forbids the propagation of old varieties due to geographic and quantitative restrictions.
In the last few years, seed initiatives in many European countries have teamed up and organized across borders under the banner of “Let’s liberate diversity!” They are defending farmers’ rights to sow seeds from their own harvest, to breed them and to pass them on. European seed initiatives from ten countries have prepared counterproposals and want to vote on them together in Graz as well as make connections in the European-wide network of resistance.
This year’s meeting is taking place in Austria in order to strengthen cooperation with Eastern European countries, yet everyone who is interested in the subject and who would like to become active is invited.”

TED Prize 2010 goes to Jamie Oliver for efforts to educate and better child nutrition and food knowledge: “I wish for your help to create a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, inspire families to cook again and empower people everywhere to fight obesity.”
Jamie Oliver’s ideas for changing the food system:
1) Put food “ambassadors” in supermarkets to inform buyers about cooking and to help consumers make good choices
2) Big brands should put food education at the heart of their business
3) Fast food should be part of the solution by working with government to help wean people off excess fat, salt and sugar
4) Better labeling
5) Fresh food should be cooked on site at schools
6) Every child should learn how to cook ten simple recipes by the time they leave school
7) Corporate responsibility should include a plan for making sure employees are fed well
8) Cooking should be passed on in the home as a vital philosophy
9) Re-instate local institutions like community kitchens that teach cooking lessons
10) Identify the experts and “angels” already doing this work and help them get access to resources
11) Businesses in America should support what First Lady Obama is doing at the White HouseRead the news, watch the lecture.

The freegans' creed: waste not, want not | Environment | The Observer
Tristram Stuart likes to rummage in bins. A tall, 32-year-old with floppy hair and chiselled features, he is a connoisseur of rubbish in all its variety. He can tell you what time central London convenience stores put their binbags out on to the streets and hazard a good guess as to what will be in them. He can tell you about how the waste policies of major supermarkets differ: how much of their rubbish is diverted to landfill and how much is recycled or incinerated; which ones lock up their bins, and which leave them open. Stuart is a “freegan” – someone who subsists largely on food discarded by others. Through this practice, he has become thoroughly acquainted him with the ins and outs of rubbish and he long ago got over any squeamishness about handling it. For him, a bin full of chucked-out food is not an object of physical revulsion. Rather, it’s an opportunity.
